Shoot! Existentialist Photography comes to Londons Photographers Gallery

This is for aspiring existential photographers! Following on from the success of its inauguration at Arles in France, the Shoot exhibition comes to London!

Curated by Centre Pompidou’s photo historian Clément Chéroux, it focuses on the photographic shooting gallery. Chéroux says “The symbolic meaning of this specific way of shooting oneself is immediately apparent… the mortal duel engenders an image. Looking at his portrait afterward, the shooter sees he trained his gun on himself. The whole attraction plays with the thrill of being one’s own executioner; a quick peep into the vertigo of self destruction”

“Shoot! Existential Photographytraces the history of this side-show… how it fascinated many artists and intellectuals in its heyday, including Simone de Beauvoir, Jean-Paul Sartre, Man Ray and Lee Miller.”
